What Are Feeds?

March 31, 2005

ACCORDING TO CNN a single issue of The New York Times contains more information than what a person living in the 17th century would digest in a life time. Getting through one's E-mail is daunting enough, let alone surfing through all of those Web sites. News feeds aggregate news and information and delivers it to you. You may subscribe only to the sources you want, and then filter those results using keywords.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS), as it is called, is free and very simple (hence the word ‘simple’ in its name). If you don't already use news feeds to get your information on the Internet, you should consider it.

Once you know what type of newsreader you want to use, return to this page and use these links to subscribe to the feed. Some of the most popular news readers are: Awasu, FeedDemon, NewsGator, Pluck and RSSReader.

Personally I prefer using Bloglines.com. It is a web-based aggregator that doesn’t require downloading any software. If you are new to this and want a very simple explanation of how to get started using Bloglines.com, I encourage you to visit this site. It gives a very simple explanation on how to get the most out of Bloglines.com.

Another popular online tracking tool is PubSub. Yet another option is a blog search engine such as Technorati or BlogPulse, both of which will allow you to keep and maintain watchlists on a variety of different blogs.

If you want to read more about blogs and news aggregators, you may be interested in any (or all) of the following web sites:

Wall Street Journal
Weblogs, Inc.

Happy blogging!
